Sustainable entrepreneurship at Audi Brussels

Our commitments

Sustainable entrepreneurship is something that will continually engage us. To create a positive impact on people and nature, at Audi Brussels we think and act in the long term and continuously improve our sustainable performance. What we cannot achieve today, we will accomplish tomorrow! We have unique advantages for this: a factory that produces in a CO2-neutral manner, a product that emits no greenhouse gases and a community that works safely and lives in a balanced way with the city around us.

Mission: Zero – four worlds, one goal

Audi Brussels’ sustainability efforts fall within the scope of Mission: Zero. This is an umbrella programme of AUDI AG and focuses on four areas of action:

  • Biodiversity

    Audi is seeking to limit increasing land consumption worldwide and is rolling out projects to contribute to the preservation of biological diversity.

  • Water consumption

    Audi is making production processes and water cycles more efficient in response to increasing water scarcity and climate change.

  • Raw material efficiency

    In addition to careful, efficient and sensible use of raw materials, Audi strives for a circular economy. This makes waste another raw material for the production process.

  • Biodiversity

    Audi is seeking to limit increasing land consumption worldwide and is rolling out projects to contribute to the preservation of biological diversity.

A factory producing in a CO2-neutral manner

Audi Brussels has officially been a CO2-neutral factory since 2018. In concrete terms, this means that our production does not emit any additional greenhouse gases.

How do we do that?

  • 100% of our energy and heat supply comes from green electricity and green gas. For example, the use of solar and wind energy, cogeneration and heat pumps.
  • This covers 95% of our CO2 footprint.
  • We compensate the remaining 5% with environmental projects such as a wind turbine project in India. 


Did you know?

Audi Brussels was the first CO2-neutral car factory to produce premium cars on a large scale. We received the label for CO₂-neutral car production in 2018 from the inspection and certification service of Vinçotte and CO2Logic.

Electrification and optimisation for a sustainable product

Corporate social responsibility is not only about sustainable production processes, it is also about the products themselves. Our factory has been taking the lead in this area for many years. Today, we only make electric vehicles that do not emit CO2: the Q8 e-tron and the Q8 Sportback e-tron. In addition, we take into account the total life cycle of the vehicles in order to minimise the environmental impact per vehicle produced. This means that we continuously optimise our production processes so that we always use raw materials, energy and water as efficiently as possible.

Did you know?

As of 2024, Audi Brussels will make use of grey water for the production of our electric cars. How does that work? Our waste water first goes through pipes to the nearby water treatment installation in Brussels (operated by Hydria). There it is purified and then it returns to our site in the form of grey water. In this way, we save up to 100,000 m³ of drinking water every year. In addition, we focus on the reuse of rainwater. An initial project in this regard allows us to reuse 2,500 m³ of rainwater annually for our sanitary facilities.

A community in balance

At Audi Brussels, we take responsibility for the broader context in which we work. In this way, we strive in various ways for a balanced relationship with the people and environment inside and outside our production site.

  • Biodiversity in and around Brussels

    At our factory site, we stimulate biodiversity with various initiatives. Think of local plantations of flower meadows, fruit trees and other trees, beehives, insect hotels and so on. But we also do our bit outside the company walls, for example with a plastic collector to recover floating dirt on the Brussels canal. Or how about our tasting oak forest in La Hulpe, just a stone’s throw from Brussels?

  • A healthy living environment

    Audi Brussels is committed to the well-being of local residents around our production site. That is why we regularly organise information sessions to inform local residents about the most important environmental and health themes and to answer all their questions. We also support charities and make a budget available for projects that improve social cohesion between all social groups.

  • Mobility in the capital

    For commuting, we encourage the use of collective buses and bicycles to reduce the traffic impact on our capital. We also strongly promote carpooling, a long-standing effort for which we won a Carpool Award in 2023. Logistically, we also take measures to reduce the environmental impact. This includes shipping parts and batteries by rail, as well as the use of electric transport vehicles in local urban traffic.
